Pregnancy massage is a popular complementary therapy when choices for pain relief such as medication are often limited.
There are plenty of benefits to having regular massage during your pregnancy. It can help many minor ailments experienced during pregnancy such achy hips, backache and heavy sore legs due to fluid retention. It can also help with the emotional preparation for giving birth.
Increased circulation – massage encourages blood flow and therefore oxygen and nutrients are circulated more efficiently around the body. This assists the work of the heart and lungs, and stimulates the body’s defence mechanisms. It also stimulates the release of toxins and other waste products from the body. The boost in circulation is good for baby as well. Another fantastic benefit of this increase in circulation results in improved sensation to hands and feet where in some cases mums to be may experience numbness of the extremities as baby puts pressure on the nerves that feed these areas.
Relaxation - Studies show massage reduces feelings of stress, anxiety and depression, and enhances feelings of well-being. As massage calms and slows the heartbeat it lowers blood pressure and brings a sense of balance and equilibrium to the body. Research shows that if mum is calm and happy then baby will be too. The human touch can be comforting and provide emotional support during pregnancy.
Physical - Many pregnant mums develop increased swelling in the body throughout their pregnancy and massage can help decrease swelling in the arms and legs. Massage helps to relieve achiness, tension, stiffness and spasm in muscles and joints therefore helping to improve posture and joint flexibility. All these benefits are hugely helpful during pregnancy, particularly as the delivery approaches.
What to expect during your pregnancy massage
The massage couch will be set up so you will lie in a semi-reclining position. This is really comfortable and safe for both mum and baby. Your body will be supported from head to toe with pillows, wedges, bolsters and extra padding to ensure you are completely comfortable throughout your treatment. You will turn from side to side for massage to your back and hips.
Postpartum massage
Following the birth of your baby it is important to help speed up recovery. Massage can help restore the body to its pre-pregnant condition by bringing relief of sore muscles and help the mother to relax more easily. Abdominal massage helps shrink the uterus and relieve subcutaneous scar tissue. It may be given as early as 24 hours after delivery in a vaginal delivery but only with written permission from your doctor or midwife. Massage also addresses the stress of carrying and caring for a newborn.
Throughout the first childbearing year, massage may have many benefits for a new mum.
